Twirl was invented in the 1960s as some of the first techniques in the world of Frisbee. It did not really become popular at the time, people stopped experimenting with it when nail delay was invented, and so it never became a style in its own right. After the discovery of nail delay, new styles and tricks focussing on this aspect of disc freestyling boomed, and the art for twirl was lost. The development of the Twirl technicques DISCTWILS really began to take off in 2005-06, when I went to the USA to study and practice the art of Frisbee. I visited more or less all the places where Frisbee/Freestyling was thriving as a sport, the places where the best players and the most amazing styles in the world had originated. Nowhere did I see anybody who had developed a style who had disc twirling as the foundation. From there these new style of disc freestyle started:
What make these style different
Why the style is different? The style is different from most of the traditional styles in the world of disc freestyling. In Twirl you have a vertical angle, whereas most other styles have a horizontal angle – this means that the audience can see the disc much better. When twirling the disc is constantly moving (around your finger or rolling around your body). You also have more control over the disc, which gives makes it easier to combine moves and choreograph shows, because the rest of your body will have more freedom of movement .In Twirl you don’t need silicone or nails. Actually, silicone makes twirling a little more challenging because it makes the rim more slippery.
